Review

Basically a slightly brighter version of the model it's in the process of replacing in Epson's line, the Epson BrightLink 536Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector ($ 1,490) offers all the same leading-edge interactive features, from being able to work with two pens at once to the ability to interact with other image sources besides computers. That puts it just as far ahead of the competition as the previous-generation model. It's also more than enough for it to become our Editors' Choice WXGA (1,280-by-800) short-throw, interactive projector

The key advantage that both models have over ultra-short-throw interactive projectors, like the Editors' Choice Epson BrightLink 595Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector is a lower price. Quite simply, short-throw lenses are less expensive than ultra-short-throw lensing systems. The key disadvantage is that because a short throw puts the projector a little farther from the screen than an ultra-short throw, it can be a little harder to avoid casting shadows when interacting with an image.

Portability and Setup

At 6.2 by 13.6 by 11.7 inches (HWD) and just 8 pounds 8 ounces, the 536Wi is easily small and light enough to mount on a cart for room-to-room portability as an alternative to permanent installation with a wall mount. It's even light enough to carry with you. Adding to its usefulness as a portable device is that once you have the projector in position, you need only two button presses on the remote and roughly a 10-second wait to calibrate the bundled pen with the projector.
There's also a USB Type A port for a document camera or for reading files directly from a USB memory key, a USB Type B port for connecting to a computer for direct USB display, and a LAN port for both controlling the projector and for sending image and audio data over a network. An optional Wi-Fi dongle ($ 99) will let you connect to your network by Wi-Fi or connect your PC or an iOS or Android mobile device directly to the projector to send images and audio.

Bright, High-Quality Image

Epson claims that the 536Wi can throw an image at sizes ranging from 53 inches to 116 inches (measured diagonally). More important, it's bright enough that an image size anywhere in that range should stand up to the typical ambient light in a conference room or classroom.

As a point of reference, according to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommendations, 3,400 lumens would be appropriate for a roughly 220- to 300-inch (diagonal) image in theater-dark lighting with a 1.0 gain screen. For my tests, I used a 92-inch (diagonal) image, with the projector 37 inches from the screen, and had no trouble finding a comfortable brightness level.

Image quality is a strong point. The 536Wi did an excellent job on our standard suite of DisplayMate tests, with suitably eye-catching color in all modes and good to excellent color balance in most modes.

Video quality is watchable for long sessions, which is good for a data projector, although it's nowhere near home-theater projector territory. As with Epson's other interactive projectors, the interactive feature works nicely, with no noticeable lag between moving the pen and seeing the effect on the screen, whether drawing a line or using the pen to move the mouse cursor. Unlike most interactive DLP projectors, however, note that with the 536Wi you have to touch whatever you're using as a screen with the pen to interact with the image.

If you don't mind an occasional shadow, or if you need a projector that's at least somewhat portable, the Epson BrightLink 536Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector delivers essentially the same interactive features as the Epson 595Wi, and unlike the latter, it's a good choice for keeping on a cart or even carrying by hand, and it costs less, too. That makes it both an attractive low-cost alternative to the Epson 595Wi and our Editors' Choice short-throw WXGA interactive projector.
